Five Guangzhou Islands for a Slower Day
River islands, village lanes and greenways offer a different side of the city without a long coastal trip.
Tickets, opening hours and event schedules may change. Check the venue or organiser's latest announcement before visiting.
Changzhou Island: history and village food
Changzhou holds the former Whampoa Military Academy, the Xinhai Revolution Memorial and other historic sites. Shenjing Village adds old houses, ancestral architecture, a literary pagoda and its well-known roast goose. Zhongshan Park and the academy-themed cultural quarter make further stops.
The source lists ferries from Yuzhu and Xinzhou, plus buses from University Town. Line 7's Shenjing station provides another approach to the island. Ferry routes and fares should be checked before travel; the source's example fare is $0.30.
Haigull Island: a cycling day
Haigull Island, or Hai'ou Island, in Shilou, Panyu, has farmland, fishponds and broad river views. A road runs for about 13 kilometres down the island, with greenway sections for a leisurely ride. Choose a distance that leaves time for breaks and the return journey.
The source lists free general access and suggests driving to the visitor centre, or taking Line 4 to Haibang and transferring to bus Pan 148. Fishing and camping depend on the rules of the particular site.
Guanlong Island: waterways and working fields
Guanlong is a riverine sandbar with fishponds, farms and views toward Shiziyang. A circuit on foot or by bicycle reveals everyday village life. The source suggests bus Pan 28 from Panyu Square or a ferry from Qingliu near Dichong station. Confirm service times, especially for the journey back.
Dadaosha Island: village quiet
Dadaosha lies among the Shiqiao, Shawan and Dajiulv waterways. Fields, banana groves and fishponds still shape its scenery. Come for a slow look around the village, rather than expecting a developed resort.
The source suggests navigating to Dadaosha Village by car or taking bus Pan 28 from Panyu Square toward the village committee terminus.
Bio Island: gardens and a river circuit
Guangzhou International Bio Island, formerly Guanzhou Island, combines research campuses with public gardens and a roughly 6.6-kilometre greenway. Diecui, Lansheng and Shuimo gardens offer places to pause along the way.
Take Line 4 to Guanzhou station. The source also describes autonomous minibuses; check the operator's current routes and booking requirements if you want to try one. Despite the source's seaside language, these are islands in Guangzhou's river system, not open-sea beach resorts.
