Before You Go: Getting Your Bearings in Guangzhou
Understand the city's layout, seasons and transport before planning your first few days.
Tickets, opening hours and event schedules may change. Check the venue or organiser's latest announcement before visiting.
Where the sights are
Liwan and Yuexiu hold much of the historic city, including Xiguan, Shamian, Beijing Road and the old central axis. Tianhe and the riverfront around Canton Tower show modern Guangzhou. Panyu is important for Chimelong and University Town, while outer districts such as Conghua and Nansha are substantial trips of their own.
Plan days by area. A map can make two famous sights look close while the actual transfer consumes much of an afternoon.
Seasons and local life
Guangzhou has a long warm season, humid summers and periods of heavy rain. Autumn and milder winter days suit walking, but check the actual forecast before travelling. Spring Festival flower markets are a distinctive seasonal experience, with arrangements announced each year.
A few Cantonese words can add to the visit, though Mandarin is widely used. Tea houses, markets and neighbourhood parks reveal as much about the city as its headline attractions.
Arriving
Baiyun International Airport connects with the city by metro, road transport and airport services. Guangzhou has several major railway stations with different destinations, so check the station printed on your ticket before choosing a hotel or transfer.
Long-distance coaches and some passenger boats appear in the source, but their routes are date-sensitive. Confirm current services rather than treating an old timetable as live information.
Moving around town
The metro is a practical backbone for sightseeing, with buses, trams, taxis and walking filling the gaps. Allow extra time for large interchanges and station exits. For suburban excursions, plan the last leg and return journey as carefully as the main train ride. Pet transport and special services mentioned in older articles require direct confirmation with the operator.
