The Western Guangdong Coast: Guangzhou to Xuwen
A long coastal journey through food towns, watchtower villages, beach resorts and the Leizhou Peninsula.
Tickets, opening hours and event schedules may change. Check the venue or organiser's latest announcement before visiting.
Give the route enough time
The source follows Guangzhou–Foshan–Shunde–Zhongshan–Jiangmen–Yangjiang–Maoming–Zhanjiang–Xuwen, with an optional onward ferry to Hainan. Allow at least eight days for the whole journey, or choose a smaller section for a relaxed break. Old driving estimates in the source are best treated as rough orientation.
Foshan and Shunde
Start with Foshan's Ancestral Temple, Liang Garden, Nanfeng Ancient Kiln and Lingnan Tiandi for craft, Cantonese opera and martial-arts heritage. Xiqiao Mountain and the surrounding parks offer a greener alternative. In Shunde, make food the centre of the day: double-skin milk, Lunjiao cake, Chencun noodles, roast goose and congee hotpot all feature in the source. Qinghui Garden, Huagai Road and Ronggui Fisherman's Wharf provide gentle breaks between meals.
Zhongshan
Sun Yat-sen's former home area introduces the city's best-known historical figure. Other stops include Zhan Garden and the arcaded streets of Sunwen West Road. Nanlang's villages, such as Zuobu and Yakou, offer a quieter countryside day; seasonal flowers and autumn-coloured trees add reasons to return.
Local dishes in the source include Shiqi pigeon, Dongsheng crisp-fleshed grass carp and Sanxiang rice noodles. Choose a central riverside hotel for an urban visit, or stay near a hot-spring or rural destination if that is your focus.
Jiangmen and Kaiping
The watchtowers and villages around Kaiping deserve time off the motorway. The source's two-day outline links Zili Village, Li Garden and Chikan, followed by Jinjiangli and Majianglong. Smaller villages and the waterways of Gulao offer alternatives to the main circuit.
In Xinhui, explore the culture of aged tangerine peel alongside villages and Liang Qichao's former residence. Coastal extensions include Shangchuan and Xiachuan islands and Naqin Peninsula. Confirm ferries independently; inter-island connections may be limited. Hot-spring stays are another option around Jiangmen.
Yangjiang and Hailing Island
Hailing Island brings together beaches, fishing-port life and the Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum. The source highlights Shili Silver Beach, Dajiao Bay, Beiluo Bay, Mawei Island and the mangrove wetlands. Choose one base and explore from there instead of changing hotels every night.
Yangjiang's food includes seafood, zhuchanglu rice rolls and goose rice. Inland detours offer karst scenery, old villages and the city's kite tradition.
Maoming
Dianbai's Romantic Coast and Yushui hot springs suit a resort break. The former government building and Yanjing Ridge appear in the source as photography stops. This section is easier with a car, but confirm public access and avoid relying on old promotional descriptions of individual properties.
Zhanjiang and the Leizhou Peninsula
In Zhanjiang, alternate the old streets and former French-influenced architecture of Chikan with waterfront walks and seafood. The source also follows locations associated with the drama The Bad Kids. Farther south, Leizhou introduces a distinct regional culture rather than simply another beach stop.
Xuwen's two headline landscapes are its pineapple-growing countryside and the southern end of mainland China. Time a farm visit around the harvest if that is your main interest. If continuing to Hainan, book the correct ferry and vehicle arrangements and leave room for weather-related disruption.
