Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall: Architecture, Gardens and History

Explore a defining landmark on Guangzhou's historic central axis, at the southern foot of Yuexiu Hill.

Tickets, opening hours and event schedules may change. Check the venue or organiser's latest announcement before visiting.

A memorial built by a wider community

Completed in 1931, the hall was funded by people in Guangzhou and overseas Chinese communities to commemorate Sun Yat-sen. Architect Lü Yanzhi combined a traditional Chinese exterior with steel and reinforced-concrete engineering to create a large interior span.

The octagonal roof, blue glazed tiles and red columns give the building its distinctive silhouette. It stands on the former presidential-office site and continues to serve commemorative, cultural and performance functions.

Details to look for

The bronze statue in front recalls Sun Yat-sen speaking. Above the main entrance hangs his inscription, commonly understood as “The world belongs to all.” The ceremonial columns on the southern lawn carry cloud and crane motifs.

The grounds also have celebrated old trees, including a centuries-old kapok near the north entrance and fragrant white champaca trees. Seasonal flowers add another reason to walk through the gardens.
