You can also arrive by boat from Yuzhu Pier; confirm sailings before leaving.Founded in 1924 on Changzhou Island, Whampoa Military Academy became an influential military and political school. Sun Yat-sen served as its director-general, Chiang Kai-shek as commandant, and Zhou Enlai also worked here. Its origins were closely tied to the first cooperation between the Nationalists and Communists and the revolutionary goal of national unification.
Many graduates went on to play major roles in Chinese politics and military affairs. Preserved and reconstructed headquarters, dormitories, offices and related sites help visitors imagine the academy's teaching and daily life.
The site places Guangzhou's role in the 1920s within a tangible setting. Changzhou Island's relatively separate geography also gives the visit a different atmosphere from the city center.
