Plan Guangzhou by Neighbourhood

Spend less time crossing the city and more time exploring it, with a simple area-by-area plan for your first visit.

Tickets, opening hours and event schedules may change. Check the venue or organiser's latest announcement before visiting.

Guangzhou is spread out, but many visitor highlights fall into a few useful clusters. Remember this outline: Liwan for Xiguan, Yuexiu for the historic city, Tianhe for the modern centre, Haizhu for Canton Tower and the river, Panyu for Chimelong, and Baiyun for the hills.

Start with the old town

Give Liwan about a day for Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Yongqing Fang, Shamian, Lizhiwan and the shopping arcades. Yuexiu deserves another day if you enjoy history: Beijing Road, Yuexiu Park, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the Nanyue King Museum are the main anchors.

Avoid a day that jumps from Chen Clan Ancestral Hall to Canton Tower, back to Shamian and then to Beijing Road. Complete a neighbourhood in a half-day or day before moving on.

Follow with the modern riverfront

Combine Tianhe and Haizhu: Guangdong Museum, Huacheng Square, Haixinsha and Canton Tower fit naturally into one day. Museums and malls are useful in the hotter part of the day; leave the skyline and riverfront for late afternoon and evening.

Give bigger outings their own day

Chimelong in Panyu needs a full day, or two if you want several parks. Baiyun Mountain is a half-day outing. Huangpu, Huadu, Conghua, Zengcheng and Nansha work better for a longer stay, a return visit or a specific interest than as rushed additions to a first two- or three-day trip.

Plan around your arrival

Arriving at Guangzhou Railway Station makes Yuexiu and Liwan convenient starting areas. At Guangzhou South, drop your luggage at your hotel before heading into the old town; visitors staying near Chimelong can remain in Panyu. From Guangzhou Baiyun Railway Station, travel towards your accommodation first rather than adding Baiyun Mountain simply because of its name.

For an easy first evening after an early arrival, Beijing Road and Dafo Temple offer straightforward transport, dinner choices and something to see after dark.
