Built between 1888 and 1894, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall began as the Chen Clan Academy. Chen lineages across Guangdong funded it together, providing a place for clan members to stay, study and meet when they came to Guangzhou for examinations or other business. Its origins reflect the close relationship between education and clan life in the late Qing Pearl River Delta.

The building is a showcase of Lingnan craftsmanship. Wood, stone and brick carving, ceramics, lime plaster, cast metal and painted decoration fill its roofs, doors, beams and courtyards. Historical stories, opera characters, flowers and mythical creatures turn the architecture itself into a gallery of folk art.

After the imperial examinations ended, the academy's original functions changed. It now houses the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum. The real fascination lies in how late Qing society, clan traditions and generations of craftsmanship remain visible in the building.
