Updating the weather…

Shamian began as a sandbank on the northern edge of Bai'etan. In the mid-19th century, changing trade arrangements after the Opium Wars led to British and French concessions here. An artificial channel separated the island from the old city, creating a distinct urban district.

Consulates, banks, trading houses, churches and homes followed, leaving a varied architectural legacy of neoclassical and eclectic buildings. Broad, tree-lined streets contrast with Guangzhou's traditional arcades. The island is a tangible record of foreign trade and cultural contact.

Protected and renewed, Shamian is now one of Guangzhou's most recognizable historic neighborhoods. Its buildings, churches and river views become more meaningful when paired with the Thirteen Hongs Museum, Shangxiajiu or Yongqing Fang, tracing the city's transformation from Qing-era trading port to modern metropolis.
