Guangxiao Temple is one of Guangzhou's oldest Buddhist sites, on ground with an even earlier history. Over successive periods, expansion, rebuilding and renaming created the layered complex seen today.

The temple has important connections with the spread of Buddhism in Lingnan, Chan history and exchanges between Chinese and overseas monks. Halls, pagodas, old trees and inscriptions preserve these links.

Its calm grounds contrast with the busy old city outside. Guangxiao Temple records Guangzhou's long role as a southern center of travel and cultural exchange as well as a place of worship.
