NANYUE KING MUSEUM-THE SITE OF KING'S TOMB
867 Jiefang North Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou
Best time to visit: any time of day
Updating the weather…

The Nanyue Kingdom lies at the heart of the museum's story. During the turmoil between the Qin and Han dynasties, Zhao Tuo established a kingdom in Lingnan with its center at Panyu, in present-day Guangzhou. The city became an early regional center of politics, commerce and culture.

Excavated in the 1980s, the royal tomb yielded a jade burial suit, other jade objects, precious metals and bronzes. The tomb and its contents reveal connections between Central Plains traditions, local Lingnan culture and overseas exchange.

The museum reaches back beyond Guangzhou's modern commercial identity to its Qin and Han roots. Reading the tomb, archaeological sites and objects together explains the depth and continuity of the city's history.
