Metro Line 6From Yide Lu station, walk to the cathedral entrance at Jiubuqian, off Yide Road.

Sacred Heart Cathedral, near Yide Road, was built in the later 19th century. Its stone construction gave it the local name Shishi, or Stone House. Twin spires and a Gothic façade make it a striking presence among the surrounding Lingnan streets.

The cathedral reflects Guangzhou's history of foreign contact and the spread of Catholicism. Inside, soaring vaults, columns and stained glass create a vertical space very different from the courtyard-centered design of traditional local temples and ancestral halls.

Shishi remains an active place of worship as well as a historic building. Together with the nearby trading streets and waterfront, it records another strand of Guangzhou's 19th-century connection with the wider world.
